Júlia Rúbies Subirós
Júlia Rúbies Subirós is a Brussels-based choreographer, performer, researcher, and educator working at the intersection of dance, vocality, and feminist thought. Originally from Barcelona, she trained in the United States before graduating from the Training Cycle at P.A.R.T.S. (Brussels). Her practice unfolds across performing, choreography, voice, text, pedagogy and collective organizing, viewing the body as a site of embodied heritage, a vessel for the personal and cultural histories we carry.
Performance & Collaborations
As a performer, Júlia has built an extensive international career, notably through long-term collaborations with Mette Ingvartsen, touring extensively across major European, North American and East Asian international theatres and festivals. Her performance credits also include projects with prominent choreographers such as Marco D’Agostin, Alix Eynaudi, Georgia Vardarou, Michiel Vandevelde, and Paz Rojo. She was also a company member of PARASOL I by Tanzquartier Wien. Reflecting her standing in the European dance community, she was selected as a DanceWEB recipient (Impulstanz Festival) 2020-2021.
Choreography & Voice
Artistic Research, Pedagogy, & Collective Practice
Deeply invested in alternative modes of knowledge transmission, Júlia’s choreographic thinking extends into pedagogy, writing, and community organizing. She has taught as a guest teacher at P.A.R.T.S. and serves on the jury for the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp. Her writing practice treats text as an extension of choreographic thought and is often integrated in performances.
Beyond her individual authorship, Júlia is committed to decentralized, collective structures that support the broader local arts ecosystem. She actively shapes this landscape through interdisciplinary platforms that foster ongoing structural and artistic exchanges between Brussels and Barcelona:
- Cascades (Barcelona): An interdisciplinary platform and collective study group she initiated to foster intergenerational dialogue within the independent performing arts scene. The project experiments with horizontal pedagogy, including prácticas cruzadas (‘crossed’ sessions pairing contrasting artists side-by-side) and alternative feedback methodologies.
- Accompany Class (Brussels): A horizontal, artist-led initiative she co-founded to facilitate daily training and community-building through non-hierarchical formats and questioning modes of transmission through practice.
- MOTA000: a series of nomadic, conversation-based events in Brussels that build temporary communities around the urgent questions driving contemporary artistic practices. Co-facilitated by Liselore Vandeput, Eszter Nemethi, and Júlia Rúbies Subirós, the platform utilizes a structured discursive score to cross disciplinary and linguistic boundaries, fostering a porous, hospitable space for critical debate and community gathering.
